A little bit
about Home
Inspection Report Writing.
Home inspection reporting is an art.
It is the final product
of the home inspector’s craft. The product should be well
organized, well
written, complete, in accordance with local laws and national
standards, and
free of spelling and typographical errors. Several reference books are
available to help with this. An indespensible asset is the Means
Illustrated
Construction Dictionary. This book contains definitions and spelling
for
thousands of construction words and terms. A college level English
Composition
course can help tremendously with report writing skills. The better an
inspector is at producing a well written, legible, and functional
report, the
better that inspector will look to his clientelle or potential
clientelle.

Why
do people sue home inspectors?
Our research has revealed
that every
plaintiff has the wrong expectation going in to a home inspection. The
“Golden Rule” for home inspectors should be “Your
performance must be equal to or greater than your client’s
expectation.”
Expectation has to set by
the inspector
and not be left up to the client’s imagination.
How often do inspectors
recommend that
a certain professional be brought in for further evaluation; and how
often to those “professionals” take a cheap shot at the
inspector? Too often.
If inspectors take the time
to properly
explain the inspection process, it’s limits and standards of
practice before the inspection starts, then the client’s
expectation can be set, adjusted and or corrected.
Elimination of this simple
step and
process will only set the inspector up for complaints and lawsuits.
